SIBU: University College of Technology Sarawak ( UCTS) is offering a new scholarship scheme called UCTS Foundation Sponsorship for new students taking up its Foundation programmes.

Its vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said the new scheme is given out in conjunction with the fifth anniversary of UCTS.

“It is a gesture of appreciation and a way to give back to the community after five years of our establishment. We’ve come up with the new scholarship scheme that caters for foundation students.

“It also replaces the 30 per cent rebate offered at the initial stage of UCTS establishment, which we stopped about three years ago,” he said, “although many parents have requested to have the 30 per cent rebate scheme back”.

However, after a review, the university wanted to give a better scheme to deserving students, he added.

The distribution of the scholarship is divided into three tiers – the first one for students scoring at least 4As in their SPM. The foundation will cover all tuition and hostel fees.

“Our tuition fee for foundation programmes is RM10,000 and the monthly standard hostel fee is RM200 under tier one,” he said.

The second tier is for those scoring 2A, 2B, 1C and above in their SPM. The foundation will cover full tuition fee.

Third tier is for those scoring at least 5C in their SPM and the foundation will cover 50 per cent of the tuition fee.

“With this new scheme, we hope we can cater all categories of students; good students will enjoy better offer and we hope that we can help students from the poor families and those in the rural areas,” he said.

“That is a way to attract good students to study at the university. Students who have enrolled for a foundation programme this semester are also eligible to apply.

“Since this scholarship scheme is not offered in this semester, they can enjoy it in the next semester. If they obtain at least 2.75 CGPA this semester, they will enjoy the tier one scheme in the next semester.”

The scholarship is one of 15 scholarships available in UCTS, catering mostly for foundation students.

UCTS always tries its best to provide as much scholarships and financial assistance to its students.
