Upgrading of drains in BDC to cost MBKS RM2.5 million

-

KUCHING: Works to improve drains at several lanes in BDC will cost RM2.5 million from the RM5 million that has been allocated to improve drains at Stampin Resettlement Scheme.

The council will upgrade the drains at Lorong 7, 9, 11, 37, 37A and 37B in BDC, Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong said following a meeting with Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

“There was initially some discrepancy to the contract sum for the upgrading work when it was announced in February but during last year’s State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, I received a reply from the Ministry of Local Government and Housing that the allocation for the whole project was RM5 million.

“I was quite shocked when I read in the news that the project would cost half of the allocated amount,” she told reporters after a meeting with MBKS secretary Vincent Ang at the council chamber yesterday.

She said the council had informed her that RM2.5 million would be used to upgrade the six lanes in BDC while the remainder would be kept aside for survey works, consultation fees and other works including the upgrading of drains in Stampin Resettlement Scheme.

“Now that the figure has been made known to us, we are clear on the subject. We are here to make sure that every sen spent is accounted for.”

She also thanked Ang and the council for arranging the meeting and providing her with the clarification.

“But we will not stop here...we will monitor the progress of the project,” she said.

Kota Sentosa assemblyman and state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen’s special assistant Dr Kelvin Yii was also present.
