KUCHING: The ‘Jom Masuk U’ programme which entered its fourth year has been successful in admitting SPM and STPM schools- leavers from Belaga District to technical schools, skilled training centres and public universities in Kuching.

Belaga assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang said the programme is organised by Kelab Belia Belaga and Kelab Belia Kubu Belaga with assistance from Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak, Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai, and himself.

“This is the fourth consecutive year that we have been able to organise the programme so successfully with 100 per cent admission of the participants to technical schools, skilled centres and universities such as UiTM and Unimas,” Liwan said when contacted yesterday.

He said the idea of bringing the participants all the way from Belaga to Kuching was to help them to get the right courses with the qualification they have.

“We came up with the idea of assisting them because Belaga lacks the facilities for them to apply online. So by bringing them here, they have a chance

to apply on the spot, and in most cases, their applications are accepted.”

Liwan, who is also Assistant Minister of Water Supply, added that the only way the rural population could advance was through education.

“As a former teacher and a former education officer, I feel compelled to assist school- leavers from Belaga to achieve their dreams of having better education. With better qualification they would have a brighter future.”

Liwan also said the programme was racially and politicallyblind as it involved all races from Belaga District including the Orang Ulus, Malays and Chinese.

“When it comes to education, we include everyone. We don’t see what race they belong to and what political parties their parents are affiliated with.”

Meanwhile, Tabung Amanah Bakun executive officer Romio Ding, who coordinated the programme said the fourth edition of the programme, which ran from March 16-19 involved 86 participants who are former students of SMK Belaga and SMK Bakun.

Prior to this, Kelab Belia Belaga and Tabung Amanah Bakun organised ‘ Jom Jadi Cikgu’ programme, which was equally successful.
