SIBU: The Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union ( KGBS) has called on the Ministry of Education ( KPM) to restructure the placement of welltrained teachers for English, Mathematics and Science in order to accommodate the state’s needs.

Its president Ahmad Malie said KGBS has often raised the issue during meetings with the ministry.

“But ironically, the answer given was that all quota for such teachers is already full according to the option, and that such situation arises due to placement issue.

“In this regard, KGBS urges KPM to restructure the placement of these teachers, especially for English, Mathematics and Science option teachers, in order to cope with Sarawak’s needs as voiced out by Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He said the union hopes the placement issue could be resolved “because the problem is not with the shortage of such teachers”.

Manyin had said Sarawak lacked well-trained teachers for English, Mathematics and Science, which he blamed for the state’s dissatisfactory performance in public examinations. KGBS also lauded the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research’s willingness to engage retired teachers, who are highly skilled in English, Mathematics and Science subjects by either paying them weekly or monthly to train teachers.

“This clearly shows the state government’s concern and commitment in ensuring Sarawakian children master all the three subjects,” added Ahmad.
