Two men detained, drugs worth more than RM500,000 seized

GOMBAK: Twolocalme­n, believed to be members of a drug traffickin­g syndicate, were detained by the police near the Rawang Toll Plaza near here on Tuesday.

Bukit Aman Narcotic Criminal Investigat­ion Department director Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said the suspects, aged 23 and 35, were detained at 2.40am by the Bukit Aman Special Tactical Intelligen­ce Narcotics group (Sting), with the cooperatio­n of the Selangor and Kedah police narcotic criminal investigat­ion department.

“Police seized 176 packets of compressed leaves, believed to be cannabis and worth RM528,000, which were hidden in the bonnet of a BMW 5 Series car in which one of the suspects was travelling in, and also seized another car, a Perodua Myvi, with the other suspect at the wheel,” he told a media conference here yesterday.

Mohmad said both the suspects, who were unemployed, had no previous record and tested negative for drug.

They are in remand for a week since yesterday for investigat­ion under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act for drug traffickin­g and face the death sentence if found guilty, he added.

In another developmen­t, Mohmad said the Bukit Aman Narcotic Criminal Investigat­ion Department had seized more than one tonne of cannabis, worth RM3.4 million between January and March 15 this year.

“We also seized various types of drugs, worth RM50.16 million, during the same period and arrested 35,116 people for various drug-related offences,” he added. — Bernama
