Sukma champs show their class at State Archery C’ship

SIBU: Former Sukma archers Vanessa Voon Li Ping and Wong Co Wan stamped their supremacy in the 19th Sarawak Outdoor Archery Championsh­ip which ended here Tuesday evening.

Voon, representi­ng Miri’s X Tune, amassed 1334 points to lift the women’s compound title.

She was in bri l liant form, emerging top in the 30, 60, 70m and runner-up in the 50m events.

“It was a tough fight especially in the final shootout with the Penang and Sabah archers and I am happy that it’s finally over,” she said.

In second placing was Kayalvhily who secured 1316 points while Nurin Aodiya who scored 1302 points was third. Both are from Penang.

For the men’s compound, Wong of Malacca collected 1374 points to finish on top.

He was first in the 30, 50 and 90m and second in the 70m.

En route, he also hit 48 bulleyes.

Johor’s Mohd Syafiq Ramli with 1351 points was second, followed by Eugenius Lo of Sabah in third spot with 1350 points.

Aghmas Afiq Akhiroman of Sabah won the men’s recurve with 1236 points after he performed consistent­ly to secure second placing in all the four events 80, 70, 50 and 30m.

Johor’s Muhd Sallehuddi­n Na on 1201 points was second, followed by Muhammad Syauqi Azmin of Sabah with 1199 points.

It was a tough fight especially in the final shootout with the Penang and Sabah archers and I am happy that it’s finally over.

Top three for women’s recurve were Priyaswary Muniswaran of Penang with 1231 points, Ang Ming Shan (1225) and Nur Husna Nadhira (1221), both from Penang.

Sabah claimed the overal l title with 20 points (4 gold, nine silver and seven bronze medals), followed by Penang with 12 points (1- 4-7), Sarawak Sports Council with 11 points (6-2-3), Perak with 11 points (4- 3- 4), Miri X Tune with seven points (5-1-1), Malacca with five points (3-2- 0), Johor with five points (1- 2- 2) and Sibu Archery Centre with one point ( 0-1- 0).

A total of 260 archers from 19 teams , including teams from Melaka, Perak, Penang, Sabah, Johor and the Federal Territory, took part in the fiveday championsh­ip.

In his closing remarks, Sibu Division Archery Associatio­n ( SDAA) president Tiong Kiong King commended the competitor­s, saying they had captivated the spectators with their skills.

“SDAA wi l l cont inue t o work hard and organise more championsh­ips to pick the elites who will represent Sarawak at Sukma,” he added.
