20 Fajar students take part in ‘Bakti Siswa’ programme
MIRI: A total of 20 students from Fajar International College will add an exciting page of memory to their college life by participating in ‘Bakti Siswa’, a ‘Students Community Service’ programme of the college held at Long Bemang, Baram from March 23 to 26.
CEO of Fajar International College, Dr Peter Tham flagged off the team in a simple ceremony at the college campus yesterday morning.
This is the first ‘ Bakti Siswa’ programme organised by Fajar International College.
This group of participants consists of students from various diploma programmes, most of them getting their first taste of staying in a Kayan longhouse.
Five students from Vietnam, Timor Leste, and South Korea took part while the rest of the team came from Sabah and Sarawak.
Activities of this three- day, two-night programme include a ‘gotong-royong’ village cleaning campaign, tuition for Primary 6 students from SK Long Bemang, study on local culture, and experiencing the local Kayan lifestyle.
The 20 students will be staying with their adopted families living in 10 doors. Included in this fun yet meaningful programme is a short sightseeing trip to Long Lama.
The objectives of this programme, the first such programme organised by a local private higher education institution in Miri, include instilling volunteerism and community care spirit among the participants; exposing them, especially students from outside Miri, to the local Kayan culture and lifestyle; providing them a platform to sharpen their leadership, teamwork and communication skills while enriching their college life.
The team is leaving for Long Bemang this morning after the flag- off, the College sending four staff to accompany the students.
