KAPIT: All longhouses along Sungai Yong and its tributaries will in future be linked by road to Kapit town.

Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat said he would allocate RM500,000 from his Rural Transformation Project fund this year to connect Rumah Roland Bangau to the gravel road at the junction of Rumah Ngelai Ampas.

“Upon completion of the road, all the longhouses along Sungai Yong and its tributaries will be fully linked by road to Kapit through Jalan Bletih- Song,” he said recently when inspecting the 4km gravel road from the junction of Sungai Ulu Yong bridge to Rumah Ngelai Ampas.

He pointed out that with road links, land in the area could be properly developed.

“I see the land here as suitable for cash crop planting. My plan for people along Sungai Yong is to venture into cash crops and fruit planting. The pineapples from Sungai Yong are one of the best and very popular among the town folk because they are sweet and crunchy. Also there are many varieties of indigenous durian,

mata kucing and dabai,” he said.

He pointed out Rumah Roland Bangau is the only longhouse along Sungai Tisa.

“The river is clean. I hope to implement the Tagang System for breeding of fishes,” he said.

The Tagang System involves getting villagers to protect the fish stocks in their area as well as maintain the cleanliness of the river.
