Good backroom staff is key, Brazil legend Carlos tells FAM
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Brazil international Roberto Carlos said Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) should hire good coaching staff and learn good football from other countries in order to improve the country’s standing in the FIFA world ranking.
Malaysia were ranked 112 when CarlosandhisBrazilianteammates stopped in Kuala Lumpur for a pre-World Cup friendly in 2002, where the South Americans won 4- 0, before emerging as world champions that year. The 2002 World Cup was hosted South Korea and Japan.
And he was surprised to see the Harimau Malaya squad fall to 178th place, their lowest ever ranking, but the 44-year- old Real Madrid legend is hopeful that it could get better year by year.
“To improve ranking, the team must have a good coach, good physical trainers, good strength and conditional coaches as well as a good goalkeeper trainer. When the coaching ( line up) is great, then you will get great football.
“The responsibility of the coach is to study other good teams like Real Madrid, Germany etc…The coach needs to keep himself up to date because football is growing very fast, you need to be practical. You need to keep on learning,” he told reporters after being named as AirAsia’s new global brand ambassador yesterday.
The former Inter Milan and Fenerbahce star also reminded the current generation of footballers that no player is bigger than the coach, who deserved to be respected for his vast knowledge and position.
Meanwhi le, to be a good footballer, Carlos said one must continuously work hard and keep looking forward to be better than others.
“Work, work and work…You always need to work with your team and also opponents. Being a footballer, nothing is more important than being with the national team to represent the country at international fixtures,” said Carlos, who had played for Brazil for almost 16 years before announcing his retirement from the international after the 2006 World Cup.
Carlos had represented Brazil at three World Cups, while at club level, he has won four Spanish La Liga and three UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid. — Bernama
