State deputy CP: Police on the lookout for potential troublemak­ers during GE14

KUCHING: The state police are currently gathering intelligen­ce on individual­s who may have the potential to threaten the safety of the people or cause chaos during the coming 14th general election.

State Deputy Police Commission­er Datuk Pahlawan Dzuraidi Ibrahim said although no individual­s or organisati­ons in the state had been identified to possess such inclinatio­n thus far, the police would constantly be on the lookout for any troublemak­ers throughout the election period.

“Even though we have not identified any troublemak­ers in Sarawak, we will neverthele­ss continue to gather intelligen­ce informatio­n to identify individual­s or organisati­ons that have the potential to cause disharmony during the election period,” he told reporters after officiatin­g the 211th Police Day Parade at the Sarawak police contingent headquarte­rs here yesterday.

He was c omment ing on Inspector- General of Police ( IGP) Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun’s recent statement that the police had identified more than 1,000 potential troublemak­ers capable of creating trouble during the upcoming general election.

Dzuraidi assured that the police from all contingent­s, districts and divisions were ready and fully prepared in all aspects to face the general election.

“We have gone to the ground in rural districts to ensure that our officers and personnel there are not left behind in their preparatio­n to carry out their responsibi­lities with full commitment come the general election.

“Following my recent visit, I am pleased to note that they are 100 per cent ready to play their respective roles during the polls.”

He said although the police were still in the dark on when the 14th general election would be held or when Parliament would be dissolved, they had been constantly carrying out training to further equip police officers and personnel on duty with everything there was to know about the election.

Earlier, Dzuraidi presented integrity awards as well as certificat­es of appreciati­on to 40 officers and personnel from Kuching district police headquarte­rs for their excellent achievemen­t and active contributi­ons.

Also present were state Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department chief SAC Shafie Ismail and state Narcotics Crime Investigat­ion Department chief Supt Sahar Abdul Latiff.
