Perak exposure raises prospects of Sukma boxers

KUCHING: Sarawak boxers delivered one gold and four silver medals at the just concluded Malaysia Cup and National Youth Boxing Championsh­ip in Grik, Perak.

Qaiirul Naim Jasman defeated his opponent from Terengganu to take the gold in the 81kg weight class. The silvers were contribute­d by Sylvester Ghalis Langgan ( 56kg), Christyude­n Ripoh ( 69kg), Brandan Ramping Nicholas (75kg) and Claire Parin Jenny ( 91kg).

A very pleased Sarawak Amateur Boxing Associatio­n president Dato Rahman Lariwoo wants to build on the success.

“It ( medal tal ly) exceeded our target and I believe this achievemen­t will motivate and instil more confidence in our boxers especially those going for Sukma XIX in Perak this September,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

“If the winning momentum of the Sukma medal prospects continue, I am confident they wi l l del iver medals for the state contingent in Sukma,” he added.

Rahman felt that the boxers still require more exposure to prepare for the Sukma challenge.

“We hope that the s tate government , t h rough t he Sarawak Sports Corporatio­n and Sarawak State Sports Council ( MSNS), will continue to support us in our plan to send the Sukma boxers overseas for training and exposure stints.

“I hope MSNS will help us more because they can really help us to build up this team,” said Rahman.
