-

SIBU: Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Sarawak (ACCCIS) has set up a socio- economic research committee ( SERC), comprising six-members, of whom three are PhD holders.

According to ACCCIS vicepresident Dr Hii Sui Cheng, who heads SERC, the committee membersarequalified professionals who can be relied upon to present unbiased opinions.

“This think-tank is needed to conduct well researched input before a decision is made especially when the issue has long term implication and consequences,” said Hii, who is also Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) president.

He, however, added: “As we are serving as volunteers, our outputs will be limited by time and financial resources unless we adopt the strategy employed by Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce andIndustryofMalaysia(ACCCIM), where the think-tank employs five full-time employees.”

To allow the think-tank members ( SERC) to better understand the structure of SERC, Hii organised a briefing by executive director of SERC Sdn Bhd, Lee Heng Guie in Kuching recently.

On another matter, Hii revealed that SCCCI’s Entrepreneur Club has been formed to touch base with the enterprising youths and to speed up the pace of producing new crop of business leaders.

For a start, he has tasked the club to work towards the setting up of an entrepreneur incubation hub in Wisma SCCCI here.

“This will provide the facility for enterprising youths who do not have much capital to make use of these facilities to develop their business,” he said.

With formation of this club, SCCCI has now created a platform to be in touch with enterprising youths and it shall be a dedicated platform for them to meet regularly and share their experiences with each other.

“The members can also organise activities directly benefiting them,” he pointed out.

“We hope through this club, some of these youths will proceed to become future leaders to takeover from the senior members of SCCCI,” he noted.
