SIBU: The Association for Children with Special Needs here was presented with a new car courtesy of the Lions Club of Sibu Host.

Club president Victor Ting handed over the Perodua Axia to association secretary Peter Sia at the Agape Centre on Monday.

According to Rachel Sandai, who is a supervisor at Agape Centre, the association’s van is over 10 years old and prone to breaking down.

“We make about two trips every day to transport the children from their homes to the centre for classes, and we have home visits every Friday.

“When the van breaks down, we need to ask for help to transport these children,” she told reporters yesterday.

She said the van would sometimes break down in the middle of the road, putting staff, children and parents in an awkward situation.

It was therefore a relief to have a new car to safely transport the children, especially during home

visits as some of the children cannot attend classes or therapy at the centre.

“Some of them are physically constrained, while some are bedridden. The purpose of home visits is to teach parents how to take care of their children. We follow up on cases and bring nurses to their homes.”

Meanwhile, the Lions Club also contributed a new motorcycle to Rody John, who is a member of Sibu Methodist Care Centre’s workplace programme.

Ting handed over the motorcycle to Rody, who stays in Sibu Jaya with his mother and sister and rides to the Agape Centre every day.

According to Wong Kee Wei, who is also a supervisor of Agape Centre, Rody’s old motorcycle is not in good condition.

“Rody and his sister are slow learners. He has been bringing his sister to Agape Centre every day for the past 10 years,” he said.

Lions Club of Sibu Host’s immediate past president Hii Yik Ping was among those present at the event.
