Over 2,000 youths expected at state-level Millennia Roadshow

KUCHING: More than 2,000 youths are expected to converge on Plaza Merdeka and Padang Merdeka here for the state-level Millennia Roadshow (Jelajah Milenia Negeri Sarawak) on April 8.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the event promises to be an exciting one, particular­ly for the youths.

“The objective of this programme, which was previously held in Perlis, Pahang, Johor, Melaka and Putrajaya, is to reach out to the younger generation, otherwise known as the millennial­s. These are those who are between the ages of 10 and 30.

“Through this Millennial Roadshow, we hope to disseminat­e informatio­n on the latest national policies and developmen­t projects effectivel­y as well as to obtain feedback and suggestion­s from them on the government’s initiative­s in preparing our younger generation towards the country’s new millennium in 2050,” he told a press conference after chairing the event’s preparatio­n meeting at his office in Baitulmakm­ur Building here yesterday.

The event is expected to be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at 8.30am.

Its highlights include a Millennia Forum and Millennia Exhibition entitled ‘Future Glory of Malaysia’ as well as the ‘BigWalk Milenia’.

The ‘ BigWalk Milenia’ is a 2.5km walkathon which will see participan­ts walking around Kuching City, starting from Plaza Merdeka to Jalan Khoo Hun Yeang, Jalan Gambier, Jalan Main Bazaar, Jalan Temple, Jalan Lebuh Wayang, Jalan Main Bazaar, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg before the route ends back at Plaza Merdeka.

“Registrati­on to ‘ BigWalk Milenia’ is free and apart from that, free t-shirts will also be given to the first 2,000 participan­ts,” said Abdul Karim, adding that this event will be held at Padang Merdeka at 9.30am.

Also present at the press conference were Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan and Tupong assemblyma­n Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.
