KUCHING: Staff and officers of the state Health Department have been told to watch out for health-related matters which can be capitalised by the opposition as issues as the general election draws nearer.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian gave this caution yesterday, saying their workplaces might turn into a hotspot if any untoward incident crops up.

“The election is near, so watch out for any issues that the opposition can harp on to get cheap publicity. Your workplace might become a hotspot if not careful.

“All the opposition is good at is complaining and after they complain, it still does not increase your salaries. So you do your work, and let me know your good work,” he said at the department’s

Dr Sim, who is Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president, pointed out that “the place you work depends on how you run it”.

As such, he called upon individuals serving the department to ponder ‘ how to change your work flow’ to improve services for the community.

He said no human beings were perfect and if they were, they would be God.

“We are bound to make mistakes but our mistakes must not be intentional. We also need to be able to tell people that we have tried our best.”

He added that those serving the department ought to embrace technology which could make it convenient to do their job.

“Look at how we can transform through technology. Even my mother, who is 77, is starting to use mobile phone this year because she wants to keep in touch with my son who is studying in Kuala Lumpur through WhatsApp, which offers free call,” he said.

Dr Sim felt that all Sarawakians could look to the near future, saying: “By 2024, our LRT ( light rail transit) will be up and running, and Simpang Tiga is one of the central exchanges.”

He hoped that department officers and hospital staff would continue to give their best in serving various communities in the state.
