MLNG CEO: Petronas considers education as the best investment
BINTULU: Petronas believes that education is the best investment because it empowers lives and improves the livelihood of the communities.
In fact, for the last 40 years operating in Bintulu, Petronas and its subsidiary companies have always been committed to the wellbeing of the communities and it has been their utmost priority, Malaysia LNG chief executive officer Pau Kiew Huai said.
He mentioned choral speaking competition as one of the programmes run by Petronas as part of its corporate social responsibility ( CSR) to enhance education.
“In the end, the people who have pursued hard in education, we also harness them to work for us or work with our partners, so we really value education for the communities.
“Our focus area mainly lies on skills and ability of the community to develop and capability to support nationbuilding as well,” said Pau during the closing of Petronas Choral Speaking competition at Bintulu Civic Centre recently.
Pau said Petronas was committed to continue this CSR programme for many more years to come.
Through the choral speaking competition, he added, they hoped to nurture interest and proficiency in the English language among students as it is an international language they have to master.
“In the engineering world like ours, more than 80 per cent of our equipment and parts are from international manufacturers,” Pau said.
Similarly in the area of technology, he pointed out, many advancements and solutions are written in English.
“We all feel that English language is a very important subject for us to communicate among ourselves and outside our country,” he added.
He said this year’s choral speaking competition focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics ( STEM) to empower the young people to stand up for themselves and become independent and excel in their career, be it engineering, non- technical, finance or economy.
“As a responsible corporate citizen, it is our duty that our CSR agenda is aligned with the government agenda such as STEM.
“With STEM, I believe we can create innovative, creative and high skilled technocrats for Sarawak and even for Malaysia,” added Pau.
SMK Bintulu and SJK Sebiew Chinese were respectively crowned as the champion in the secondary and primary school categories in the seventh edition of the choral speaking competition.
Present were head of School Management Unit of Bintulu District Education Office Lau Siong Lee, Asean Bintulu Fertilizer (ABF) managing director and chief executive officer Lucas Takip, principals and headmasters.
