Christians observe Easter Triduum in lead-up to Easter

-

MIRI: Christians hold various activities to mark the ‘Easter Triduum’, which culminates in Easter Sunday.

The ‘Paschal Triduum’, as it is also known, is the period of three days that begins with the evening mass of the ‘Lord’s Supper’ on Holy Thursday, followed by Good Friday to solemnise the ‘Crucifixion of Christ’ and reaches its high point in the ‘Easter Vigil’ to celebrate the ‘Resurrection of Jesus’.

At the Grace Methodist Church, Easter Sunday celebration commences at 8:30am with Rev Lenita Tiong giving a sermon on ‘His Victory is Our Victory’, followed by Easter picnic and egg-hunt for children.

During Good Friday service, local preacher Tan Kok Chui delivered ‘Via Dolorosa’ to share his recent experience of walking along the ‘Way of Suffering of Jesus Christ’ in Jerusalem.

“After the service, members shared the bread they had brought after fasting from sundown on Holy Thursday to after the Good Friday service,” said Tiong yesterday.

Meanwhile, Bishop Richard Ng of Miri Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church was happy with the good turnout for the various activities held at the St Joseph Cathedral.

“Despite the congestion at the cathedral, Catholics came in droves for the service and also the activities organised as part of Easter Tridum,” said Bishop Ng after Good Friday service.

He added that St Joseph’s Cathedral Parish–Miri and Pustaka Miri would jointly host ‘Easter Carnival’ on April 7-8 at the library’s premises.

Many activities have been lined up including an exhibition, the Easter flea market, blood donation drive, demonstration on flower arrangement, children’s story-telling session, children’s colouring contest, Iban storytelling competition, a ‘Fun Corner’, children’s movies and music concert.

Admission is free. Those interested to take part in the activities are encouraged to register at the service desk after each mass.

The Parish Office is open Sundays, from 8am to 1pm.
