Man gets seven years, three strokes for armed robbery

KOTA SAMARAHAN: A 29year- old man was sentenced to seven years’ behind bars and three strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here yesterday for committing armed robbery on a female Grab driver last month.

Mohd Shahanaaz Suri pleaded guilty to the charge, an offence he committed around 9.30pm on March 23 at Jalan Stakan here.

He was convicted under Section 397 of Penal Code by presiding judge Afidah Abdul Rahman.

The 45-year- old driver had picked up a male passenger, later identified as the accused, after she received a ride request from e-hailing app from a pick-up point at Stapok Lorong 14 to take him to a sport centre at Jalan Stakan.

On arrival at the destinatio­n, Shahanaaz requested the driver to drop him at Muara Tuang instead to meet a friend.

At this point he pulled out a machete and held it at her neck, and demanded her to get out of the car.

He then drove off in the victim’s car, which had in it her personal belonging including a smart phone.

She however managed to escape unhurt.

The machete was seized from him when he was arrested about 4am on March 27 at a workers’ quarters in Jalan Wan Alwi.

Initially, he faced two charges for disposing the stolen vehicle and the mobile phone, but after an inquiry, the prosecutor applied for the charges to be withdrawn.

The custodial sentence was ordered to take with effect immediatel­y after the sentencing.
