MIRI: About 60,000 people will benefit from the construction of a new health clinic in Niah which is expected to begin in the near future.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday announced an allocation of RM50 million for the construction of the health clinic and RM5 million for Bekenu Esplanade at Sibuti River.

He announced the good news during his brief visit at the ‘Bah Bedudun Lahau-lahau Nurun Ke Menalan’ programme at Bekenu Esplanade, which was attended by a big crowd.

“I was told about the priority of having a health clinic and thus I am approving a RM50 million allocation for the new clinic and another RM5 million for the esplanade across ( Kampung Rambai),” he said.

At the same time, he called for the people to support Barisan Nasional ( BN) in the coming 14th general election.

Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus, meanwhile, said the construction of the ‘Type 3’ clinic in Niah would help ease overcrowding at Miri Health Clinic and benefit people in Niah and Sibuti areas.

“This is something the people have been waiting for because the small clinic here ( Bekenu) can’t handle the rising number of patients. With the new clinic, people in Niah and Sibuti need not go to Miri for their check-up.

“Since the PM has approved the allocation for the new clinic, the construction will begin soon after all relevant matters are dealt with,” she said.

A Type 3 Health Clinic is defined as a clinic with around 300 to 500 patient attendances per day. Managed by medical officers, the clinic provides general outpatient, maternal and child, dental and rehabilitation care. It will also have laboratory and radiological services.

As for the allocation for the esplanade, Rosey said it is to help with the flood mitigation infrastructure across the river and also for the benefit of spectators during water sports events.

“The 600-metre upgrade of the esplanade is meant for flood mitigation and to enhance people’s experience in watching any water sports event held at the river which has gained much attention from the young,” she said, adding the upgrade will also help in promoting water sports and tourism in
