Abg Johari proposes road from Marudi town to Long Terawan in Tutoh-Apoh to boost tourism
MARUDI: The construction of a road linking Marudi town to Long Terawan in Tutoh-Apoh area will help to boost tourism in Baram and Ulu Baram.
This is because the Baram area has a huge potential to be developed as a tourism attraction which could not yet be developed due to limitations in infrastructure and facilities and the constraint caused by the mountainous terrain of the area, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, who proposed the construction of the road, said.
He added with the completion of the road, one of Sarawak’s famous tourist attractions - the Gunung Mulu National Park - would be more accessible to foreign and domestic visitors, ultimately improving the economy of Baram because visitors would spend their money there.
The Chief Minister made the proposal to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the ‘ meet the people’ gathering and groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Marudi bridge that was officiated by the latter at Marudi Square here yesterday.
“When the Marudi bridge is completed, it will facilitate travel from Miri to Marudi and more and more people will come to this town.
“After this Marudi bridge, I would like to ask our Prime Minister to build a road linking Marudi and Long Terawan, to make it easier for tourists to come to Mulu using waterways by boat from Long Terawan.
“With this road, more and more tourists will be coming here, spend money here, buy handicrafts from here, food would be high in demand and the economy here will improve,” he said.
In another development, Abang Johari assured Najib that the people of Sarawak and in Baram will continue to support him and Barisan Nasional ( BN) in the coming general election.
Also present were deputy chief ministers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Marudi assemblyman Datu Dr Penguang Manggil as well as State Legisltaive Assebly Deputy Speaker and Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala.
