Man charged with possession of methamphet­amine

MIRI: The Magistrate­s’ Court here yesterday charged a man with possession of methamphet­amine weighing 7.64 grams.

Mohamad Adzahar allegedly committed the offence at 9.40am on April 6 at a hut in Kampung Piasau Utara.He faces a charge under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 39A (1) of the same Act.

The Section provides for between two and five years in jail, and three to nine strokes of the rotan. No plea was recorded from the accused.

Senior assistant registrar Md Syafique Md Hilmie set May 11 for further mention of the case. Mohamad was released on RM2,500 bail with two local sureties while awaiting the next court date.

Earlier, prosecutin­g officer Insp Mohd Khairi Mohd Noor had applied for a new date for further mention of the case, as they were still awaiting the chemist report.

In a separate case in the same courtroom, Md Syafique set May 18 for further mention of a case involving a foreigner accused of being in possession of dangerous drugs. He also ordered for Junal Kasim, 22, from Kampung Busbus, Jolo, Sulu, Philippine­s to be further detained in the Miri Central Prison.

The postponeme­nt was made following Mohd Khairi’s applicatio­n for a new date for further mention of the case as the chemist report was not ready yet.

Junal faces a charge under Section 12 ( 2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 12 (3) of the same Act.

The Section provides for a fine of up to RM100,000, or up to five years in jail, or both. Junal was allegedly in possession of 0.23 grams of methamphet­amine at 10.40am on March 3 in front of a house at Kampung Tudan.

He also faces another charge under Section 15 (1) (a) of the same Act, which is punishable under Section 15 of the same Act for drug abuse. Junal allegedly committed the offence at 11.35am on March 3 at the Narcotic Criminal Investigat­ion Department here.

The Section provides for a maximum fine of RM5,000, or up to two years’ jail, and observatio­n of between two and three years.
