No intention to stand, says Tiong on Lanang candidacy rumours
SIBU: Dudong assemblyman Datuk Tiong Thai King has quashed rumours that he will contest the Lanang parliamentary seat this coming general election.
He said rumours are rife that he had been proposed as the Barisan Nasional ( BN) candidate.
“To be honest, I have never been approached (to be Lanang candidate), and I have never had that intention to stand. Even if my name had been proposed, I would not accept it either,” he said when met during the distribution of 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) here yesterday.
Tiong said as the assemblyman for Dudong, which is part of Sibu parliamentary constituency, he was in essence already serving the constituents of the seat.
“Let another person contest. The chance should be given to a younger person. I am already committed there ( Dudong),” he added.
Tiong – also Sibu Municipal Council chairman – disclosed that Andrew Wong and Andrew Ting from United People’s Party ( UPP) had been proposed as candidates for the general election.
He said the final decision on who will be the candidate will be up to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak.
On rumours that gamblers are placing bets that he will be a BN candidate in the general election, Tiong called on these people not waste their time and money.
“The prime minister will soon announce on this (general election candidates). Let the matter rest.”
