UCTS scholarshi­ps for Bachelor of Technology in Wood Products Processing

SIBU: Full scholarshi­ps will be given to the first 12 students registerin­g for University College of Technology Sarawak’s ( UCTS) new programme – Bachelor of Technology ( Hons) in Wood Products Processing.

This will cover the tuition fees for the four-year programme.

“The scholarshi­ps are provided by Yayasan Sarawak and Sarawak Timber Associatio­n ( STA),” the university said in a press release here yesterday.

Recently, UCTS received approval from the Malaysia Qualificat­ions Agency (MQA) and the Ministry of Higher Education ( MOHE) to offer Bachelor of Technology ( Hons) in Wood Products Processing.

“UCTS collaborat­es with Sarawak Timber Industry Developmen­t Corporatio­n (STIDC) for this programme to stimulate the downstream timber industry in this state.

“Graduates from this programme will become the backbones in catalysing the developmen­t of the timber industry in Sarawak.

“Their knowledge in adding value to existing products and developing new products will benefit the state not only regarding economy boosts but also providing more job openings in future” said head of programme, Professor Dr Razak Wahab.

Bachelor of Technology ( Hons) in Wood Products Processing is offered for May and September intake 2018/2019, it added.

The programme will run for four years (eight semesters) with 128 credit units and to be conducted full-time at UCTS with the language of instructio­n in English.

The bidding and teaching method is convention­al which includes lecture, tutorials, practices, laboratory work and industrial training.

Besides, to prepare the students for the real working environmen­t, a site visit to the forest area, logging area and factory will be done in every semester.

UCTS is planning to have collaborat­ion with several universiti­es in Asean which will benefit the students in especially their soft-skills and connection­s.

Programmin­g technology in the wood industry is a new field with so many opportunit­ies that need to be tackled by the graduates.

Courses such as “CAD/CAM Modelling for Wood Technology, Engineered Wood Products, Green Technology, Utilisatio­n of Wood Waste and Agricultur­e Residue and Timber Constructi­on and Design” are specially designed to provide skills required in the downstream timber industry.

“The Bachelor of Technology in Wood Products Processing is sheltered under Centre of Excellence in Wood Engineered Products ( CeWEP) that is responsibl­e for studying and conducting intensive research in wood engineered products.

“This programme will provide the students with more handson experience with numerous engineered products.”
