MIRI: United People’s Party ( UPP) Pujut branch has assured that it will speedily resolve the poor condition of Piasau road through engagement with Miri City Council.

Its chairman Bruce Chai said they had received many complaints that the road near GK roundabout posed safety risk after it was upgraded into two lanes recently.

“The issue was brought up about a week ago when the road was re- opened to the public. Following that, a few issues were brought up to us.

“Firstly, was the street lighting. There is no street lighting for these new two lanes. The other was some parts of the road were damaged after it re- opened. The road lines were also not properly drawn,” Chai told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Chai pointed out that they had received numerous complaints through various platforms including Facebook and WhatsApp and even during the branch’s Mobile Action Team ( M. A.T) programme at Piasau Utara Fish Market recently, with some expressing confusion over the road.

Following the high number of complaints received, the team went to the ground to see for themselves.

“We then engaged with Miri City Council engineers on the matter and they assured us that rectifications will be done. They have started these rectifications by putting in proper street lines that are clear and more traffic- friendly this week.

“We have also been assured that damaged parts of the road would be repaired and that had been done as well,” said Chai.

Chai also said street lights would be installed in the area, but it would take some time.

“We have been assured that street lights would be put in but that will take a bit of time because they are in the process of getting quotation and budget on the matter.

“So, this is part of our engagement with road users and the city council to try to resolve matters quickly and efficiently as public safety has always been our utmost concern before anything else,” he added.

Chai added that another issue brought up was the quality of road construction, which the council said they would conduct a study to see if all technical specs were adhered to and assured that more safety measures would be put in place soon.
