‘Don’t waste MRP funds, use them to benefit the people’
SARIKEI: Minor Rural Project ( MRP) funds are disbursed by the Barisan Nasional ( BN) government for grassroots leaders to implement projects or activities that benefit the community.
The onus was on the grassroots leaders to find out how best they could spend the fund, Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat said when presenting MRP grants to several Village Security and Development Committees and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from Meluan constituency here yesterday.
MRP funds were not meant to be wasted or spent extravagantly, but for grassroots leaders to implement projects which could bring immediate benefits to the people, especially for addressing urgent problems.
He advised the grassroots leaders - comprising those from various NGOs, associations and community leaders — to work closely with the government to ensure synchronised development for their respective community in particular and Meluan in general.
By working as a team, they could come up with a proper and well organised development programme for Meluan.
He would continue to ensure the young generation in the constituency enjoy quality education as a means to uplift the socio-economic status of the people of Meluan.
Thus, he advised the JKKKs to use part of the MRP fund to organise educational programmes for their school-going children as well as other knowledge enhancing programmes, especially ICT.
His commitment to the betterment of education for Meluan people was reflected in the big fund he allocated schools, and incentives to students who excelled in public examinations, and secured places to pursue degrees in engineering and medicine in public universities.
He supported the local education fraternity as reflected in his contribution of RM40,000 for their 2018 Teachers’ Day celebration fund. During the function, Rolland distributed MRP grants totalling RM440,000 to 30 JKKKS and NGOs in Meluan for the first phase of his MRP allocation this year.
Distribution of MRP allocations under the second and third phase would be done in stages in the coming months, he said. Representatives from various departments and local community leaders were among those present.
