112 shuttlers eyeing tickets in Sukma selection tourney

KUCHING: Ninety- three male and 19 female shuttlers from 22 teams will play in the Sukma XIX Selection Tournament at the Sarawak Badminton Associatio­n (SBA) Hall along Jalan Lapangan Terbang here from April 13 to 15.

Among the teams sending more players are Sibu’s New Gen Badminton Team ( 16 players), SBA (15) and Kuching’s Pacific Badminton Management (13).

The tournament aims to select eight boys and eight girls to carry Sarawak’s challenge at Sukma XIX in Perak from Sept 10 to 22.

Heading the hopefuls in the girls category is top seed Wong Ling Ching who is now studying at Bukit Jalil Sports School in Kuala Lumpur.

Wong, who won the Girls U16 singles title in the first leg of the Sarawak Junior Closed early this year, will have to contend with second seed Kashley Kho Tze Yin, 3/4th seeds Kourtney Kho Ker Yin and Felicia Fong Xin Hui from SBA. In the boys singles, top seed Darren Law (SBA) and second seed Aaron Chieng Jin Yu ( CJS) are expected to face a stiff challenge from PBM’s Owen Ting Shih Wee and Syafiq Azhar Haizan. Top seeds in the boys doubles are Aaron Chieng-Tommy Pang, Jeremy Kho- Owen Ting, Barrie Chong-Nik Azizi Murat and Darren Law-Mohd Qusyairi Adiman. The girls doubles event is divided into two groups with Felicia FongFlora Fong (SBA), Erika VallensiaK­ashley Kho (SBA), Amelia Yap-Galdys Ten (PBM) and Nicole Hon- Sim Kia Min (SBA-MBA) in Group A. Contenders in Group B are Kam Wei Li - Kristy Tay ( MBA- SBA), Kourtney Kho-Vivienne Kua (SBA), Ho Sing YenOl ivia Hiu ( BN- ERC) and Claire Sim- Irene Sia (NGBT).
