PIC on track for start up in the first quarter of 2019

-

KUCHING: The Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) marked another step forward with the successful supply of power to the refinery complex, which includes the Crude Distillation Unit, Atmospheric Residue Desulphurisation Unit, Hydrogen Collection Distribution Unit and Hydrotreating Units as well as other critical components.

The power is generated by Pengerang Co- generation Plant ( PCP), one of the six associated facilities developed to support the PIC.

The PCP will supply electricity through two independent distribution systems of which 275 kilo-volt will be channeled to the Refinery complex and Utilities units, while another 275 kilo-volt will be channeled to the Steam Cracker and Petrochemical complex.

PCP is designed to ensure reliable supply of power and steam with an installed capacity of 1,729 megawatts of electricity as well as up to 1,480 tonnes of steam per hour.

Speaking about the event, Petronas executive vice president and chief executive officer downstream Datuk Md Arif Mahmood said, “The power supply to the Refinery Complex is an important milestone to us, to ensure the complex is ready for start-up in 1Q19.

“This is a critical year for us, as PIC moves into pre- commissioning phase towards achieving the mechanical completion and start-up of the complex.”

The Refinery complex, which has the capacity to refine 300,000 barrels of crude per day, will produce a range of refined petroleum products, including gasoline and diesel, which meet Euro 5 fuel specifications. It will also provide feedstock for the integrated petrochemical complex, with a nameplate capacity of 3.3 million mtpa.

PIC is part of Malaysia’s ambitious 22,000- acre Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex ( PIPC) project to establish new engines of growth and push the nation into a new frontier of technology and economic development in the oil and gas downstream sector.

The PIC has achieved an overall completion of 87 per cent as at February 2018.

Apart from the refinery and PCP, the PIC also includes steam cracker, petrochemical plants and other associated facilities that include an LNG re- gasification terminal, a raw water supply plant, a deep water terminal, an air separation unit as well as centralised utilities and facilities.
