Norah’s replacement must be familiar with constituency — Rep
KUCHING: The new Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate to replace Datuk Norah Abdul Rahman in Tanjong Manis must be familiar with the constituency.
Assistant Minister of Corporate Affairs Abdullah Saidol reasoned that the new candidate must be willing to work harder to bring development to the rural constituency.
“Also, the candidate must make regular visits to the area and dare to speak out about the problems faced by the people.
“Tanjong Manis has great potential to contribute towards the state economy.
“It ( Tg Manis) needs more and urgent infrastructure development. The new candidate must therefore be willing to work really hard to develop the area.”
He said this in response to Norah’s statement on Saturday that she would not be defending the seat in the coming general election.
Norah was quoted as saying that she has decided not to seek renomination due to health reason, and has met Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan of her intention.
Abdullah also said the candidate must be fair to the people in the area, which is made up of different races, religions and cultures.
It is equally important that the candidate understand the philosophy and ideology of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), especially its culture. He or she must also support the various initiatives introduced by Abang Johari.
“The candidate must also be brave to speak in Parliament in order to protect the interests and rights of the state,” said Abdullah, who is Semop assemblyman, adding that he is leaving the candidacy to Abang Johari, who is PBB president.
According to Abdullah, the incumbent has contributed significantly to the area, particularly in seeking fund from the federal government.
Assistant Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datu Len Talif, meanwhile, said he respects Norah’s decision.
Len, who is Kuala Rajang assemblyman, said Norah has served well during the two terms as Tanjong Manis MP.
