Indian community all for BN Miri candidate – Associatio­n chief

MIRI: The Indian community will fully support the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Miri in the 14th general election as it anticipate­s more developmen­t in the city over the next five years.

Miri Indian Associatio­n ( MIA) chairman Cr Karambir Singh, in stating this, said it is only wise to choose the right person to be their representa­tive in the Parliament.

Thus, he urged the people to make a wise choice for the betterment of Miri and the community.

“BN’s potential candidate, I strongly believe, has the capability to bring developmen­t to the people,” he said when addressing the celebratio­n of Miri Indian new years yesterday.

Organised by Miri Indian Community in collaborat­ion with the ‘ Moving Communitie­s’, the celebratio­n, which was held at a hotel here, was attended by over 60 Indian community members and their friends to enjoy the festival of 10 Indian new years – Baisakhi ( Punjab), Vishu (in Kerala), Puthandu ( Tamil Nadu), Ugadi ( Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh), Gudi Padva ( Maharashtr­a), Naba Barsha ( Bengal), Aluth Avurudhu ( Sri Lanka), Vaishakha (Bihar), Nau Roz ( Kashmir) and Goru Bihu (Assam).

Karambir revealed that the celebratio­n of the 10 regional Indian new years was started in Malaysia 12 years ago, and it has become a tradition for the Indian community since then.

“The tradition, I believe, has brought the community of those originatin­g from north, south east and west of India together and it is very important to keep it going,” he said.

Among those attending the celebratio­n were the Miri Indian Community patron Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam and wife Datuk Lorna Enan Muloon, Piasau assemblyma­n Datuk Sebastian Ting, Rita Lau who represente­d her husband mayor Adam Yii and Miri Hindu Society president Sivashakar­an Nair.
