Hope Place to carry out outreach project into state’s interior
KUCHING: Hope Place will be carrying out its outreach project into the interior of Sarawak from June 14 to 17 – this time it is set to benefit those in Long Selulong Penan settlement in Ulu Baram, Miri.
According to its publicity release, the project called ‘Giving hope, Sharing Love’ will focus on bringing medical aid and solar system to the longhouses and villagers.
Hope Place founder Kelvin Wan expressed his gratitude for the sponsorship of 38 solar panel units, which came in recently.
“However, we are still short of the accessories necessary for the installation including cables, batteries, bulbs, controllers, LED lights and pieces of parts for the solar system to work.
“A set of accessories for one solar system costs RM800. So we are hoping that the generous public could contribute or sponsor the 38 sets of the accessories,” he appealed.
The Penan community there, according to Kelvin, are still living a simple and quite primitive lifestyle as they are not equipped with any electricity generator or kerosene lamp to give them light when darkness falls.
“It is total darkness after sunset and there is little to do after that. More importantly, it is difficult for the children to study and do revision at night. It is so important for these children to complete their basic education.
“So the solar system is crucial to bring electricity and light to their homes, encourage the children to study and change their lives for the better,” he said.
For more information regarding this project or to contribute, contact Hope Place at 082- 505987 or hotline 013- 5672775.
Those keen to volunteer, especially those with four-wheel drive trucks, can contact Dr Ling Tung King – a veterinarian from Miri – at 019- 8855588.
“We are targeting 30 cars to participate in this project. Currently, we have 23 cars registered, with nine from Kuching, one from Labuan, three from Sibu, two from Miri, and eight from Brunei,” said Kelvin.
“It gives us a lot of motivation to see this project receiving positive response and attracting volunteers from Brunei. “We are still calling for more volunteers and the closing date is May 31,” he added.
