KUCHING: The inaugural Charity Run 2018 organised by United People’s Party ( UPP) at Crown Towers here attracted some 800 participan­ts yesterday.

Themed ‘ The Power of Love’, the event witnessed the donation of RM50,000 to 10 charitable organisati­ons.

Each charitable body received RM5,000 from UPP deputy president Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, who represente­d UPP president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.

The recipients were Kuching Autistic Associatio­n, Persatuan OKU Kuching ( House of Joy), Sarawak Society for the Deaf Kuching, Kidney Associatio­n of Sarawak, Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society, Kuching Life Care Society, Carnation Single Mother Associatio­n, Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng, PDK Sentuhan Kasih Kuching and Diabetes Malaysia Sarawak Branch.

Dr Jerip joined a warmingup session with runners before flagging off the 5km-run around 6.30am.

All of you are part and parcel of this community and as such, your caring attitude will do well to foster unity in our society.

Prior to the f lag- off, he read Wong’s text- of- speech and handed over the cheques to the recipients.

According to Wong, the charity run aimed to help charitable organisati­ons by providing them financial support to carry out their activities.

He said the presence of all participan­ts showed that they were caring and thoughtful of individual­s in need.

“All of you are part and parcel of this community and as such, your caring attitude will do well to foster unity in our society,” he added.

Wong stressed that it is important to maintain a healthy body and mind so that everyone could enhance their capacity to serve those who needed their help.

He said taking part in the run and engaging in other forms of exercise played a role in maintainin­g a healthy lifestyle.

He added that regular workout could help prevent or manage health problems and concerns such as stroke, metabolic syndrome, Type- 2 diabetes and depression.

“A healthy body and a healthy mind certainly will produce vibrant and energetic members of the community who will assist our state government in developing Sarawak to become a prosperous state.”

He also thanked the organising committee and sponsors who made the run a success.
