KUCHING: Twenty- seven individuals were detained here and in Miri last week following police raids on two illegal cockfighting dens.

State CID chief Datuk Dev Kumar said the first raid was carried out on April 17 when a Miri CID team raided a cockfighting pit near a longhouse at Miri-Bintulu Road.

“Seven local men were arrested by the team; four live and one dead cockerels were seized from the site along with various gambling paraphernalia,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The second raid, he disclosed, was carried out on a cleared land at Batu Kawah on Sunday where 20 locals and a Filipino male were arrested.

“Three live and two dead cockerels, as well as various gambling paraphernalia, were confiscated from the site (in Batu Kawah),” he said, adding that those held during the two operations are aged between 18 and 76.

He said the raids were part of the ongoing operations against illegal gambling activities in the state, which saw a total of 58 individuals – including those arrested for cockfighting – nabbed between April 16 and 22.

“Twenty- seven raids were conducted on counters selling illegal lottery tickets in eight districts. The raids resulted in the arrest of 29 individuals and seizure of RM7,820, mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationery items,” said Dev.

One raid was carried out against cyber gambling, which saw two persons held. All those arrested are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act and Prevention to Cruelty to Animals Ordinance 1962.
