Swinburne Sarawak graduation sees 246 receive scrolls

KUCHING: For the first time, students from Lebanon and Tajikistan were among the graduates of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus here when they received their scrolls yesterday.

The graduation ceremony, held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), saw 246 graduates receive their scrolls from Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is also Pro Chancellor of the university.

A total of 105 undergradu­ate students graduated with Bachelor of Business (Accounting, Accounting and Finance, Finance, Human Resource Management, Internatio­nal Business, Management, and Marketing).

Nine graduated with Bachelor of Design ( Multimedia), 11 in Bachelor of Informatio­n and Communicat­ion Technology, 11 in Bachelor of Computer Science, eight in Bachelor of Science (Biotechnol­ogy) and 86 in Bachelor of Engineerin­g with Honours (Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical and Electronic­s, Robotics and Mechatroni­cs, and Robotics and Mechatroni­cs/Computer Science double degree).

Six graduates received their scrolls for the Master of Business Administra­tion ( Internatio­nal), two for Master of Constructi­on Management, one for Master of Engineerin­g (Research) and three for Master of Science (Research).

The convocatio­n ceremony also saw Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus giving out Master of Constructi­on Management for the first time.

In addition, three postgradua­te students received Doctor of Philosophy degrees in engineerin­g and science. Swinburne Sarawak has produced 26 PhD graduates since 2012.

The graduates comprised 202 Malaysians and students from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Mauritius, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

Swinburne Sarawak is home to around 4,000 students from 50 countries.

Meanwhile, Valedictor­ian Yusuf Buwanguzi from Uganda said he was honoured and humbled to be selected as student speaker as it was an opportunit­y to represent his fellow students.

“My university journey has enabled me to grow and expand my knowledge, nurture my technical and leadership skill, and interact with a vibrant multicultu­ral community. I look forward to gaining more experience as I grow in my career and become a leading engineer specialisi­ng in computer aided product design and developmen­ts,” he said.

Present were State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, presiding officer Andrew Dix representi­ng Swinburne University Chancellor Graham Goldsmith, and Swinburne University ViceChance­llor Professor Linda Kristjanso­n.

Also present were Swinburne Sarawak’s Deputy Vice Chancellor and chief executive officer Professor John Wilson, Council and Board members, executive group and senior management members of the Sarawak campus.

Swinburne University of Technology is one of Australia’s top universiti­es. It is based in Melbourne and has an internatio­nal branch campus in Kuching.

The Sarawak campus offers foundation, undergradu­ate and postgradua­te studies in business, engineerin­g, science, informatio­n and communicat­ion technology (ICT), and design.

It is the highest ranking internatio­nal university in Borneo, based on the inaugural Asia-Pacific University Ranking 2017 by Times Higher Education (THE).
