18 men charged with being members of organised criminal group

KUALA LUMPUR: Eighteen men were charged in the Sessions Court here yesterday with becoming members of an organised criminal group known as ‘Geng 08’, which is believed responsibl­e for several serious crimes, including murder and robbery, reported in the federal capital since three years ago.

They are R. Nagarajan, R.Ganesh, K. Ron Raniel, K.Baramuruli, V. Anith Kumar, P. Sharveswar­an, R. Alagendran Pillai, S. Kanagadran, M. Satish Varman, S. Shashi Kumar, G. Thiagu, S. Pandian, C. Navin Naidu, M. Neriendran, V. Shasi Kumar, B. Seleveraj, M. Parwin dan L. Pravin Kumar, aged between 19 and 38.

All of them were charged with becoming members of the organised criminal gang here between Jan 1, 2015 and April 8 this year.

The charge, under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonme­nt for up to 20 years, if found guilty.

They nodded after the charge was read out to them in Tamil before judge Datuk Zainal Abidin Kamarudin, but no plea was recorded as the case come under the jurisdicti­on of the High Court.

The men were also not allowed bail as they were detained under the Security Offences ( Special Measures) Act 2012.

The prosecutio­n was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Fadzlan Mohd Noor, while lawyers Najib Zakaria, K. Komagan, Yeoh Siang Thing, Harpal Singh, M. Yoshini, K.Muralidhar­an and S. Narasimhan represente­d 11 of the accused.

The remaining seven accused were unrepresen­ted.
