Call for SADNR to register deaf in northern region
MIRI: Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin called on the Sarawak Association for the Deaf Northern Region ( SADNR) to organise and register the deaf in the northern region.
“You can also appeal to the public to register family members or anyone who is deaf. The data will help the association with activities and programmes to benefit the deaf community,’ Lee said at the installation cum charity banquet recently.
“Try to organise and provide relevant skill training so that the deaf can stand on their own feet and live normal lives,” he said.
In announcing a grant of RM10,000 for the association headed by Mary Law, Lee said that he is happy there are volunteers who help the less fortunate in the society.
“This is a way for us to compliment the government’s effort to build a caring society. I am happy to observe that there are many voluntary and charitable organisations in Sarawak, as this means we have good society where people are willing to help and care for the less fortunate,” he said.
Meanwhile, association chairlady Mary explained that the main purpose of setting up the association is to uplift the upbringing of the deaf community in the northern region of Sarawak comprising of Miri, Bintulu, Lawas and Limbang.
“Some of the deaf in the community have low education, hence receive low salary. They have been neglected while those who have good salary enjoy better life,” she added.
In this context, she urged society to understand the deaf culture well and encourage everyone to master sign language to communicate with the deaf.
Present at installation were Sarawak Society for the Deaf founder Sim Boon Chuan, Lion Datin Ellis Suriyati Omar and association chief advisor HII Teck Yun.
