MRSM lift Don Drury Memorial Trophy

KUCHING: MRSM A emerged as the new champions of the Don Drury Memorial Trophy at Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field last Sunday.

In the battle of unbeaten teams, MRSM A defeated SMK Asajaya A 22-10 in the Cup fi nal.

MRSM A kicked of f their campaign in style when they blanked SMK Tebedu 31- 0 in the opener in Pool B.

This was followed by a 26- 0 victory over SMK Asajaya B and a 19- 0 win over SMK Wira Penrissen.

MRSM collected another trophy as their B team ended up as the runners- up in the Bowl final after losing 0-12 to SMK Wira Penrissen.

SMK SAKURA took the Plate af ter they edged defending champions SMK Muara Tuang A 10-7.

SMK Asajaya B collected the Spoon when they defeated SMK Tarat 21- 5 while SK Tebedu won the Shield after they blanked MRSM C 22- 0.

SMK Laila Taib beat SMK Muara Tuang B 7- 0 to win the Saucer.

Event sponsor Sue Drury, who is the wife of the late Don Drury, gave away the main prizes.

Also present were Drury’s daughter Datin Dona Drury Wee, Sarawak Rugby Union president Richard Song Swee Jin, secretary Abdul Ghafar Arshad, SRU advisor Philip Aso, Kuching Rugby Football Club ( KRFC) president Ahmad Yusof Shah Mokhsen, treasurer Dick Bentham and veterans of KRFC John Ritchie, Azlan Borhan and Abang Azman Abang Annuar.

Meanwhile, Song commended the fami ly of Don Drury for sponsoring the annual event in honour of Don Drury.

“Drury didn’t play rugby but yet was an avid fan and supporter of KRFC who never failed to show up to watch the matches at Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field for many years.

“The family decided six years ago to host this Memorial Trophy without fail and it is organised by KRFC and sanctioned by SRU. This shows that we have kind, passionate and generous supporters in our society,” he said.

He also expressed satisfacti­on with the Boys U16 event which attracted 12 teams from schools in Kuching and Samarahan.

Since its inception, he noted, KRFC have unearthed two outstandin­g ruggers Hamizan Rosli and Samuel Rentap who are now in the national U21 team.

“I call upon more spirited and philanthro­pic public and clubs to host more such tournament­s to promote rugby among our students and youth,” Song added.
