Local man arrested for alleged cheating regarding job offers

-

MIRI: Police arrested a local man for suspected involvement in a cheating case related to work in a neighbouring country on Monday (April 23).

Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah confirmed the arrest of the 39-year- old suspect from Jalan Pujut Tanjung Batu here, following a police report lodged by a woman on the same day.

In the report, the 21-year- old complainant claimed that at around 12pm on April 23, she had met the suspect in the Pujut Adong area to discuss matters of employment, when the suspect asked for money.

“During the discussion, people who claimed to have been cheated by the suspect suddenly came into the office and a fight broke out. The suspect was later arrested by the public before being handed over to the police for further action,” he said.

Following the arrest, Lim said the suspect was then taken to the Miri Central Police Station for further investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

It was learnt that the suspect was believed to have been involved in fraudulent activities for the past three months by offering employment in Brunei Darussalam, with every applicant required to pay between RM500 to RM1,000.

The promised job did not materialised after a long wait. The angry victims then attacked the office on Monday. Up to yesterday morning, at least three police reports were lodged by the victims against the suspect.

During the arrest, the police also seized personal data of the job applicants from the suspect as case evidence.
