Minister launches book on fascinating caves in Mulu National Park
KUCHING: A book depicting the fascinating caves at Mulu National Park called ‘ The Show Caves of Mulu Sarawak ( 3rd edition)’ was launched by Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian at Riverside Majestic Hotel yesterday.
Written by Darrel Tsen Nyuk Choi and his children Dianne SC Tsen and Carlin EM Tsen, the latest edition is an upscale of the two previous editions published in 1991 and 1993.
“To write a book, it takes more than the labour of love, you must be passionate. It takes a lot of time, dedication, discipline and both physical and mental strength,” said Dr Sim in congratulating the Tsen family at the launch.
The book, according to him, is a recognition of the people’s contribution, especially those who play a vital role in the upkeeping and development of Mulu World Heritage park besides depicting details of the journey and the beauty of the caves.
“I hope the book would be able to promote Sarawak. My wish is that we could also digitalise it (book),” said Dr Sim.
Meanwhile, Darrell viewed the book as a ‘blessing for his family’ as it involves almost everyone in his family to make the project a success.
“I started the third edition after I was challenged by my children and grandchildren, who wanted me to have another go at it (writing),” said Darrell.
He added that he revisited Mulu with his children and assistants to gather information and retake photos of the caves and the surrounding environment.
Co- author Dianne also shared with the guests her experience in Mulu in her opening address.
“It is a privilege to be a Sarawakian. On that, I would like to say ‘ Ibu Pertiwiku’ ( My Motherland),” she said.
Two other books entitled ‘ My Life’s Journey’, an autobiography by Darrel, and ‘ Ma’s Kitchen Stories’ by Dianne Tsen and Chai Pei En, were also launched at the same event.
