SBEU to stage Labour Day rally, charity run
KUCHING: Sarawak Bank Employees’ Union (SBEU) will hold a rally to address the loss of jobs involving staff in the banking industry this Labour Day.
A press statement yesterday said workers in Sarawak are facing serious challenges in coping with the ever increasing cost of living.
“Job loss in the banking industry as the result of digital banking can also be expected. SBEU will remain on the forefront of this ongoing struggle. We will not forget our social responsibilities and community service,” union secretary- general Law Kiat Min said in the statement.
He said the rally would be held as a side programme during the union’s charity run on May 1 in Kuching, Miri and Sibu.
The run aims to raise public donations of more than RM200,000 for SBEU’s welfare and charity fund.
The event will kick off at 6.30am with fun- filled activities, lucky draws, fitness programmes and health screening.
Some 2,000 members, colleagues, family members and friends are expected to take part in the run, which will take place at the compound of Kuching South City Council ( MBKS), Permai Lake Gardens in Sibu and Marina Square Miri.
“The union is currently seeking donations of more than RM200,000 which will be 100 per cent channelled to the SBEU Welfare and Charity Fund. The fund was established in 1993 under the Trade Unions Act with the sole objective of assisting the less fortunate members of society.
“Over the years, the fund had donated more than half a million ringgit. All SBEU members believe that we must not forget those in need. The donations will be handed over to various charitable organisations and needy individuals in Sarawak,” said Law.
