Develop thirst for knowledge, Jamit advises students

KAPIT: Students must have a thirst for knowledge, discipline and a positive attitude towards their studies in order to lay a solid foundation for their future.

Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit, in giving the advice, said students should not worry themselves about anything else during their schooling years, and instead fully focus on their studies as it is their ‘core business’.

“Hard work will bear good results. High achieving students are those who are hardworking and have positive attitude and discipline towards their studies.

“Most importantly, you must develop a thirst for knowledge,” he said when officiating at the annual general meeting of SMK Kapit’s parent-teacher association ( PTA) here on Sunday.

Jamit also called on parents to play their role in raising and educating their children, and to be active participants at schoolrelated functions in order to follow their progress in school.

“Don’t leave everything to the school authorities. Teachers are educators and disciplinarians but at home, parents must play their part and spend quality time with their children.

“Children’s education should be the only priority of parents as there is no other investment more worth than human capital investment. When children become successful, it is the parents who feel proud and it is also one of the best ways to improve social status, especially for those from the rural setting.

“Like most of you, I am also from the rural area. My parents sent me to school and I did well. Today, I stand here in front of you partly because of my education,” he said.

Jamit went on to congratulate SMK Kapit for performing well in both academics and co- curricular activities in 2017, and challenged them to do better this year.

“In the arena of learning, there is always room to improve.”

He also announced a grant of RM15,000 to the PTA to carry out activities designed to improve the quality of education.

SMK Kapit is the oldest and largest secondary school here, with a student population of 1,667.

Principal Azlinda Mohd Nor, senior assistants Kuiek Bon Siau and Bennet Bungkong, PTA chairman Kelimbik Sibat and vice chairman Puso Bujang were among those present at the event.
