Abang Johari grants RM3 mln for upgrading Sibu Central Market

SIBU: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg made his first official visit to the Sibu Central Market yesterday, bringing good tidings to the vendors there.

He announced a fund of RM3 million for upgrading of facilities at the market, including its ‘tamu’ section.

“The market is very important to draw tourists as well as local consumers. Being the biggest in the central region, it houses a total of 1,572 traders including sellers at its ‘tamu’ section.

“After seeing the market, I think the facilities need some upgrading so that it will look nice and tourists will come here,” he told reporters when having breakfast at a stall in the market after his walkabout.

He also said the upgrading is for the convenienc­e of the people as well as the traders.

The fund will be used to replace the piping for treated water supply as well as grey water, replace rain gutter, build hanging ceiling at the first floor of the market and to repaint and clean the market building.

It will also be used to install CCTV cameras, upgrade trading stalls at the tamu section as well as food and drink stalls.

Those accompanyi­ng Abang Johari during the walkabout were Assistant Minister of Science and Technologi­cal Research Dr Annuar Rapaee, Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, Kelvin Kong and Dato Andrew Wong, who are BN- SUPP candidates for Lanang and Sibu respective­ly.

Abang Johari’s wife Datin Patinggi Dato Jumaani Tun Tuanku Bujang, Minister of Internatio­nal Trade and E- Commerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and his wife Datin Sri Pauline Leong also had their breakfast with the Chief Minister.
