KUCHING: The Kuching Fitness Association yesterday held a charity workout event “Wod For Hope” hosted by Crossfit Kuching, where proceed from sales of tickets to the event was donated to Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS).
This event also saw one of their members, Gordon Chung, going bald in support of SCCS’s annual awareness and fundraising campaign, Go Bald.
The workout following the shave saw 60 participants and a total of RM6,380 was raised to support children suffering from cancer.
Kuching Fitness Association president Carter Wei says Wod For Hope will be an annual event in Kuching Fitness Association calendar to raise awareness and funds for charitable bodies through fitness.
He thanked the corporate sponsors, namely Oppo Electronic, KTS Mutual, Carus Eco Plants, Carus Sport & Event, Artsy Daphy, Golden Premium, Um Colour Printing, Chabo Restaurant & Bar, HiveFive, Greenleaf Food & Beverage, Borneo Pharmacy Supplies, Hong Leong Bank, Alliance Bank, Rehab Concept, Universal Cable ( Sarawak), Supreme Cold Storage, Karuna ( Sarawak) Enterprise, FohFatt Farm, Jurutera CSD, Elevated Entity and all the individuals who came forward to support and make the event a success.
Go Bald, which was first launched in 2009, is the largest head- shaving charity event in Sarawak.
In its tenth year, the signature fundraising event for SCCS is an act by the public to demonstrate support for children who are battling cancer, and also raises funds for SCCS to continue providing support to childhood cancer patients and their families, through counselling services, providing accommodation, food and transport for outstation patients and financial aid, to name a few.
Childhood cancer is now the leading cause of death among children and adolescents in developed and developing countries.
In some countries, deaths due to childhood cancer are more than the combined deaths from all types of childhood illnesses.
In Sarawak, a child is diagnosed with cancer every 5 days.
However, childhood cancer is considered a “modern day miracle” due to the significant increase in survival rates especially in developed, high income countries. With awareness and support, SCCS aims to increase access to care for children with cancer.
Other organisations from any parts of Sarawak are also encouraged to hold a satellite shave at their own premises as part of their CSR project.
