16 teams to vie for honours in this weekend’s KPM Championsh­ip

KUCHING: About 300 exponents from 16 teams all over the country will congregate in Kuching this weekend for the Kementeria­n Pendidikan Malaysia ( KPM) Wushu Championsh­ip at Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya.

Participat­ing teams include defending champions Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Perak, Pahang, Perlis, Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan, Johor, Penang, Sabah, Labuan and Sarawak.

The tournament is organised by the Wushu Federation of Malaysia ( WFM) and jointly hosted by the Wushu Federation of Sarawak ( WFS) and the Sarawak State Sports Council ( MSNS) with the support of KPM.

WFM are hoping to select potential athletes through this meet to represent Malaysia in the World Junior Wushu Championsh­ip to be held later this year.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has been invited to open the event on Friday evening during the welcoming and fellowship dinner.

Taolu events include various discipline­s such as changquan, daoshu, j ianshu, gunshu, qianghsu, nanquan, nandao, nanqun, taijiquan and taijijian.

The championsh­ip also includes Sanda for Boys 15-18 years old (48kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 65kg, 70kg, 75kg, 80kg) while Sanda for Girls 15-18 years old are 48kg, 52kg, 56kg and 60kg. Team events for the U18 and U12 categories as well as Boys Duilian and Girls Dulian will also be contested.
