Mandarin-speaking non-Chinese common in Sarawak

MIRI: The ability to communicat­e fluently in Mandarin among non- Chinese is a common phenomenon in Sarawak.

Bumiputera parents, for example, are sending their children in droves to Chinese schools to obtain formal education.

This is the opinion of permanent honorary patron of the school management board of SJK ( C) Chung Hua Bakam, Datuk Hii King Chiong.

celebratio­n yesterday.

Hii, a prominent businessma­n, commended the school for nurturing a conducive environmen­t for the students of all races, proof that Sarawak is indeed a place of racial harmony and unity.

SJK (C) Chung Hua Bakam has a student population of about 37 per cent Chinese and the rest nonChinese.

Later at the same function, Hii officiated at the opening of the school’s administra­tion block and a covered basketball court.

Lambir assemblyma­n Ripin Lamat, Piasau assemblyma­n Datuk Sebastian Ting who is also BN candidate for Miri, BN Sibuti candidate Lukanisman Awang Sauni, chairman of the school board Yong Hock Seng and headmaster Wong Ngiik Ming were also present.
