Deputy chairman tells Sibu folk to take pride in making DAP strong

-

SIBU: Folk here should feel proud of being strong supporters of DAP, State DAP deputy chairman David Wong told them.

He said their strong support to the opposition has been translated into bigger allocations from the BN government which is desperately trying to win the two seats in Sibu this 14th General Election.

‘If both Sibu and Lanang seats belonged to BN, I doubt whether the people of Sibu will receive all those goodies announced by the Chief Minister in the past two days,” he told a press conference yesterday morning.

With him were DAP national adviser Lim Kit Siang, Lanang candidate Alice Lau and Bukit Assek assemblywoman Irene Chang.

Wong was reacting to the grants totaling RM9 million announced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg during his visit here the past two days.

The grants included RM3 million for Rejang Park Central Sewage System, RM3 million to upgrade and repair Sibu Central Market, RM1 million for new building block of SJK ( C) Kiew Nang, RM1 million to repair Sibu Chinese Association’s building and RM1 million for Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry to build it Innovation Hub.

Then on Thursday, the chief minister announced the construction of a six km road costing RM60 million to connect Sibu Jaya township to Lanang area.

The road would be of R3 standard (tarred), four lanes, and when completed in two and half years’ time, will shorten the travelling time from the township to Sibu Central.

Wong said nobody is against development as implementing more projects will definitely bring more benefits to the people and help raise the standard of living.

“However, I am puzzled as to the timing of the announcement. Why now when the election is just around the corner,” he wondered.

Wong also hit out at the BNSUPP Lanang candidate for trying to fool the people that a win for BN-SUPP would make the Sarawak Government stronger and the chief minister would be given a stronger mandate to fight for Sarawak’s rights.

“This is all nonsense. We are now talking about parliamentary election, not state election and even when the PH takes over Putrajaya, Abang Johari will still be the chief minister.

“In fact, if Pakatan Harapan takes over the federal government, Sarawak government will stand to benefit greatly as 50 per cent of its oil and gas royalty will be automatically channeled to the state coffer,” he added.

DAP Lanang candidate Alice Lau also criticised her opponent Kelvin Kong for using development to fool the people.

“They are singing the same tune and as always, they say the areas under DAP will not witness any developments.

“Tell me then, what developments have there been in Selangau, Julau or Saratok, all of which are the stronghold of the BN government for decades?”
