‘UPP is still an independen­t political party’

KUCHING: United People’s Party ( UPP) is still an independen­t political party registered with the Registrar of Societies, said UPP Central Secretaria­t.

In a statement issued to The Borneo Post yesterday, it said UPP had entered a Memorandum of Understand­ing ( MOU) with Sarawak United People’s Party ( SUPP) to initiate discussion­s with a view to eventual merger of the two parties.

“However, due to the general election, we have only had the chance to have an initial discussion within the Consultati­ve Committee set up under the MOU,” it said.

“We urge all UPP leaders and members to continue to serve the people and support all party activities and assure that UPP Central leadership will always act in the best interest of the party and its members,” said the statement.

The statement was made following a speech by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at the launching of Sejiwa Senada programme at MJC on Saturday in which he was quoted to have mentioned that “there was no more UPP as the party had merged with SUPP”.
