Curtin Malaysia hosts biggest graduation this year

MIRI: Curtin University Malaysia presented scrolls to its 682 students on Saturday – the largest number of graduates ever recorded by the university so far.

The ‘Class of 2017’ assembly comprised 299 undergradu­ate and postgradua­te students from the Faculty of Business, 37 from Faculty of Humanities, 338 from Faculty of Engineerin­g and Science, and eight from other Curtin campuses.

They attended two separate ceremonies on the same day – one for those from the Faculty of Business and Faculty of Humanities in the morning, and another for the Faculty of Engineerin­g and Science in the afternoon – at the same 1,500- capacity Curtin Malaysia Recreation and Event Centre.

The Australian High Commission­er in Malaysia Andrew Goledzinow­ski, Curtin University ( Perth) acting chancellor Sue Smith and its council member Steve Scudamore, vice- chancellor Prof Deborah Terry, and deputy vice- chancellor (internatio­nal) Prof Seth Kunin were among the dignitarie­s present.

Representi­ng Curtin Malaysia was its pro- chancellor Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, Curtin ( Malaysia) Sdn Bhd chairman Datu Ose Murang, Curtin Malaysia Management Board chairman Datuk Lee Kim Shin, and pro vice- chancellor, president and chief executive Prof Jim Mienczakow­ski.

Two-hundred and ninetythre­e undergradu­ates from the Faculty of Business received their Bachelor of Business Administra­tion and Bachelor of Commerce certificat­es, while six postgradua­te students received their masters and doctorate degrees in business, accounting and management.

Thirteen students from Faculty of Humanities received undergradu­ate degrees in Mass Communicat­ions, and 24 received their postgradua­te qualificat­ions in Project Management.

Meanwhile, 308 students from graduated with Bachelors in Engineerin­g, Science and Technology, Chemical Engineerin­g, Civil and Constructi­on Engineerin­g, Electrical Power Engineerin­g, Electronic and Communicat­ion Engineerin­g, Mechanical Engineerin­g, Petroleum Engineerin­g, Applied Geology and Computer Systems and Networking.

Graduating alongside them were 30 postgradua­tes, graduating with masters and doctorate degrees in Chemical Engineerin­g, Civil Engineerin­g, Electrical Engineerin­g, Electrical and Computer Engineerin­g, Mechanical Engineerin­g and Petroleum Engineerin­g.

This year’s graduation had one of the highest number of postgradua­tes – 60 in total, and the highest number of Doctor of Philosophy ( PhD) degrees, received by 20 individual­s.

Curtin Malaysia has produced over 5,500 graduates since its establishm­ent in 1999, including 35 PhD holders since 2011.

Coinciding with the graduation was the awards ceremony at Miri Marriott Resort & Spa that evening, where high- achieving students were presented with university and industry- sponsored awards for excellence in academics, extra- curricular activities and community services.

According to Mienczakow­ski, the graduation and awards ceremonies were also occasions for the university to celebrate many of its latest achievemen­ts.
