Pei Min Middle School gets RM1.5 million for new block, land premium

MIRI: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday announced RM1 million and RM500,000 in land premium al locat ions from the state government for the constructi­on of a new administra­tion block for Pei Min Middle School Miri.

He also said if Miri Barisan Nasional ( BN) candidate Datuk Sebastian Ting wins the election, the state government will give another RM1 million for the school.

“This year, the state allocated RM7 million in annual grants to 14 Chinese independen­t secondary schools, continuing with the tradition started by former chief minister, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem,” he said at the earth-breaking ceremony for the new 5- storey, 80,000- square foot administra­tion block of Pei Min Middle school which can accommodat­e 2,000 students.

He encouraged Bumiputera students to enrol in Chinese schools to learn Mandarin so that they can help in enhancing the state’s economy.

“Our land is big and with the space we have, take the opportunit­y to make Sarawak great and we are going for digital economy, thus we must know how to manage our economy through technology.

“My heart is to develop Sarawak to become the best state in Malaysia by 2030 and to see an independen­t and forward- looking Sarawak. We must have our own autonomy with our own way because we can manage ourselves,” he added.

He also advised the Chinese to remainunit­edwiththeB­umiputera community of Sarawak to ensure a strong Sarawak.

MIRI: The Chinese community has been reminded not to overlook the state government’s assistance to Chinese schools.

Pei Min Middle School’s administra­tion block building committee chairman, Dato’ Hii King Chiong said that the state government had put in a lot of effort to help Chinese education.

“The chief minister is truly a man of his word, having recently presented RM7 million annual grant to the Chinese independen­t schools in Sarawakand­hadidentif­ied a piece of land in Miri to generate income to run the schools,” said Hii at an earth-breaking ceremony for Pei Min Middle School administra­tive building block yesterday.

Hii called on the people to support BN candidate for Miri Datuk Sebastian Ting as he is part of the team led by chief minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg negotiatin­g with the federal government on the return of the state’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement .

Hii also appealed to the government to continue giving assistance to the Chinese community, and possibly to increase the allocation for Chinese schools.

“Our Chinese schools need assistance and fund to continue improving the quality of education,” he added.

Among those witnessing the earth-breaking ceremony were Abang Johari, Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim and Ting who is also the Piasau assemblyma­n.
