Dr Yii records thumping win in Bandar Kuching over BN’s newcomer
KUCHING: Democratic Action Party ( DAP) candidate Dr Kelvin Yii’s first foray into politics saw him score a thumping win in Bandar Kuching.
Dr Yii garnered a total of 48,548 votes against 12,575 votes by Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Kho Teck Wan, winning with a majority of 35,973.
Kho, of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), was also contesting for the first time in an election.
Earlier, Dr Yii and his supporters gathered peacefully outside the Kuching South City Council ( MBKS) multipurpose hall while chanting ‘ubah’ (change) several times.
Following the official announcement by Returning Officer Tay Guan Huat, the new MP thanked Bandar Kuching voters for putting their faith in him and promised to serve the constituents to the best of his ability.
“With this opportunity, I will work harder to serve the people of Bandar Kuching parliamentary area. I will not disappoint those who voted for me,” he said when met by reporters.
Kho, who was also present at the hall with her supporters, congratulated Dr Yii for his victory and believed he would be able to perform better than his predecessor Chong Chieng Jen.
“I hope Dr Yii represents the voice of Bandar Kuching people. They have chosen him and I wish Dr Yii all the best in becoming Bandar Kuching MP,” she said.
