SHOAW face SDRU U18 in School Cup final

KUCHING: SMK Agama Sheikh Haji Othman Abdul Wahab (SHOAW) are looking forward to bag their second title this year when they face Sibu Division Rugby Union ( SDRU) U18 team in the Schools Cup final of the Kuching Rugby 10s Tournament at the Sarawak Stadium, Petra Jaya on Sunday.

They stormed into the final after outclassin­g Kuching Division Rugby Associatio­n ( KDRA) U18 team 31- 0 yesterday while the Sibu side beat SMK Asajaya 20-7 in the other semi-final.

The Kuching Division schools rugby powerhouse, coached by Zulkarnain­hisham Sarbini, made a roaring start to their campaign by blanking SMK Asajaya 47- 0 in Group A before thumping Kolej Vokasional Matang 53- 0 in the second match and they went on to beat SMK Muara Tuang 46- 0 in their final match to top the group.

“My boys have played very well in the preliminar­y round and also in the semi-finals.

“I believe they can perform well in the final but we will not be taking our opponents lightly because they are a good side and experience­d,” he noted.

“It will be a tough game against Sibu because they have bigger forwards.

“I believe it wil l be a very interestin­g final and we need to have a better game plan,” added Zulkaranai­nhisham.

SHOAW were the Kuching InterSchoo­l U18 champions early this year.

They have also played in the MCKK, MSSS and MSSM, NRDP Sevens prior to this tournament.

Meanwhile, the Plate final will be played between KV Betong and Kolej Abdullah after the two teams beat SMK Matang 20-7 and KV Matang 33- 0 in the semi-finals respective­ly.

The Club Open competitio­n will kick off today with 20 teams vying for the challenge trophy, cash prize of RM5,000 and medals for the champions.

It is divided into four groups with WORC, SOWRC, KPMP Raven, Blue Tiger RC and ROS RC in Group A while Wolfpack, KK Sharks RC, UTP Drillers, ATM Barbarians and RTK Turbo are in Group B.

Teams in Group C are KWRC, Sukma Sabah, Awesome RC, Flying Nomads and Betong RC while Group D comprises KRFC Blackcatz, SDRU Swan, UPM Angels, X-Hunters RC and GB13 Skulls.

Also participat­ing in this inaugural tournament organised by KDRA are four teams in the Veteran ( Above 35 years old) category namely SIbu Goldies, KK Sharks, KRFC Legends and Sajoha Legends from Johor.
